Lakeland Varsity Hockey vs SLU recap: LHS 5, SLU 2

The Eagles took the LIA ice on Wednesday (12/14) vs South Lyon Unified. Lakeland and SLU have battled for LVC champ bragging rights since the birth of the league in 2017 with South Lyon earning the first three titles and Lakeland winning the past two seasons.

Lakeland put the scoreboard to work in the first minute of the game thanks to a blistering snap shot by freshman Austin Scanlon (assists to seniors Joe Miller and Timmy Hinkle). Senior captain Regan Voorhies put the Eagles ahead later in the first on a nice outlet pass again from Miller via Reid Sutherland. 2-1 after one.

SLU tied the game in the second in spite of a large Lakeland shot advantage. Miller wasn’t done assisting on the third goal of the night and second for Voorhies who took Miller's pass to the SLU slot and shot left while moving right. The balance of the game was spent in the South Lyon end as Lakeland nursed their one goal lead. Brennan Grant (Luke Weinberger) finally ripped off the bandage to put the Eagles up by two. Sutherland and Scanlon each got their second points of the night when Scanlon found Sutherland at the point and he found the net thanks to a heavy snap shot. Final score 5-2 Lakeland.

Coach Ronayne on the league win: "Every league game is important especially vs. SLU. We outshot South Lyon but didn't put the game away until much later. And we gave up too many scoring chances. We need to be better."
