SOUTH LYON HIGH SCHOOL: 3
On Wednesday, Dec. 6th, the Hockey team traveled to Brighton to meet South Lyon United in their first of two meetings this season. It's been either LHS or SLU crowned LVC champion since the league was established. South Lyon kicked off the scoring in the first period on the first power play of the day. Lakeland senior Tim Hinkle would strike back burying a centering pass from Brennan Grant. It would be Hinkle again this time from linemate Austin Scanlon who smartly backhanded a deflected Grant snapshot to the ever-patient Hinkle. 2-1 Lakeland after one.
Both teams scored goals in the second period. This time it was Grant's turn to score on a nifty tip off of junior Joe Sesi's wrist shot (from Hinkle). 3-2 after two. The teams traded shots in the third period as senior goalie Paul Baker was tested several times coming up with save after save. Unified finally broke open the scoring with 8 minutes remaining. With under a minute to go the game was heading to OT until junior Bryce Martin and sophomore Nate Dell decided to end it in regulation. Martin aggressively swept the puck off of a Unified attacker's stick to Dell who walked the puck in on the SLU goal and tucked it between the goaltender's pads to make the final score 4-3 Eagles.
Coach Ronayne on the win: "This was a solid win for us. It wasn't pretty but our top players made the plays when it counted. Paul was the difference for sure and the Hinkle just line keeps producing. As for the game winner you couldn't pick a better stick for the puck to land on. Nate was sure handed and put it away for us. A huge goal."
